Project type

Design Futures Consultancy / Strategic Design Research

Overview
Design Futures Consultancy is a speculative research and strategic design project exploring how contemporary design management practices may influence society's long-term ability to think critically, make decisions and respond to complex global challenges.
Developed through the Design Management module, the project positions design as a tool for research, systems thinking and strategic foresight. Rather than proposing immediate solutions, it investigates emerging patterns, maps systemic relationships and uses future scenarios to encourage reflection on the long-term consequences of today's decisions.

The Challenge
How can design help organisations recognise long-term risks that remain largely invisible in the present?
The challenge was to translate complex social, technological and organisational systems into accessible visual frameworks that support critical reflection rather than simple problem-solving. By combining systems mapping, futures thinking and speculative design, the project explores the tension between increasing reliance on optimisation and automation and the gradual erosion of human agency and long-term thinking.

The Outcome
The project resulted in a strategic Design Futures Consultancy proposal that combines systems mapping, futures scenarios and visual communication to help organisations explore uncertainty and anticipate emerging challenges.
The final outcome demonstrates how research-led design can make complex systems more understandable, encourage meaningful discussion and support more informed, resilient decision-making. Rather than offering fixed answers, the project creates tools for questioning assumptions, exploring alternative futures and making invisible risks visible.
