Overview
Faces of War is a social design project exploring how visual communication can sustain empathy and engagement with humanitarian issues during periods of public fatigue.
The project responds to the ongoing war in Ukraine and investigates how personal stories can create deeper emotional connections than statistics or news coverage alone. Through documentary-inspired visual storytelling, it aims to highlight both the devastating consequences of war and the resilience of those affected by it.
The Challenge
How can design communicate a prolonged humanitarian crisis in a way that remains meaningful, relevant and emotionally engaging?
The challenge was to develop a visual communication system capable of addressing war fatigue while encouraging audiences to reflect, empathise and remain engaged with issues of justice, human dignity and collective responsibility.
The Outcome
The project was developed as a concept for a public exhibition Faces of War: Destruction, Resistance and Hope.
The outcome included exhibition branding, a series of thematic poster designs, personal-story narratives, promotional materials and a supporting lecture programme. The visual language combined documentary imagery, collage techniques, symbolic colour palettes and typography to communicate complex human experiences through accessible and emotionally powerful design.
